The TNGIC Technical Committee recently submitted an application to the Federal Geographic Data Committee’s (FGDC) National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) 2003 Cooperative Agreements Program seeking funding to develop spatial metadata training in Tennessee. By extending the concept of FGDC and NSGIC (National States Geographic Information Council)-supported metadata training initiatives, the program’s goal is to cultivate a team of metadata trainers from the TNGIC membership to coordinate metadata training activities throughout the state.

The first objective of the proposed program will bewas a workshop for the team of selected metadata trainers in Tennessee. This will bewas a two-day workshop utilizing an FGDC developed curriculum. Joe Sewash will bewas the the trainer for this workshop. The goal of this workshop is to train 10-125 metadata trainers from each of the three regions of the State. Each trainer will be expected to participate in at least one of the two metadata training workshops associated with the 2004 TNGIC conference, one metadata training workshop to be scheduled in their region of the state, and at least one training session for colleagues and associates at their workplace.

Additionally, TNGIC will schedule ad-hoc events as scheduling and resources permit.

In early 2003, the TNGIC Technical Committee, with support from the US Fish and Wildlife Service office in Cookeville, established a National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) Clearinghouse node. For TNGIC to encourage implementation of metadata throughout Tennessee, a functional web-based metadata submission and management system for the TNGIC Clearinghouse node is planned as part of this proposal. The trainers, workshop participants and TNGIC members will have a resource for contributing metadata records to aid in the population of this Clearinghouse node.

Through this approach to maintain and expand the level of metadata activities in Tennessee, the mechanisms, educational materials, and training opportunities will be available to all TNGIC members for years to come and will serve to improve the linkages between the various sectors working with GIS in Tennessee.
